Response Question 2

Another factor that affects the abortion process is whether or not parental consent is needed to perform the procedure. Parental consent involves the parent being informed of the abortion before it occurs, and in some giving permission for their teen to get an abortion. Do you think that parental consent should be mandated in all states or do you believe that teens should be allowed to make the decision for themselves?

  1. Touchy touchy touchy. No, I don't think parental consent should be mandated but I also don't think that teens should be allowed to make the decision for themselves. I don't know what kind of counseling goes into a teen's decision right now but I do think there should be meaningful discussion that the decision means ending a life. The teen needs to feel that and be able to live with it. I am totally opposed to the use of abortion as a means to escape responsibility for carelessly unprotected sex.

  2. This is a difficult question to answer as I do not have any children, however, I would suggest that parental consent is a wise choice for young people under age eighteen. This has been established as an age for young people to make decisions about other things and I think it holds the same for this decision. I don't think young teens 15 or 16 necessarily have the capacity to make the judgement - it varies with every teen.
